Jennifer Phillips

Jennifer has taken part in a number of exhibitions across Suffolk including The Annual Aldeburgh Beach Lookout Summer Exhibition, Suffolk Open Studios Group Shows at Aldeburgh Ballroom Gallery and Snape Maltings, and solo exhibitions and residency at Asylum Studios, Rendlesham Suffolk and The Crafthouse Woodbridge.

Jennifer’s work aims to show the connection and energy between the land, the sky and ourselves by using layers of acrylic paint, texture, glazes and a limited palette to add depth and contrast to her paintings.

When Jennifer observes the land itself, inspiration is gained not just by the visual surroundings but also by the feeling of being part of the landscape: the soft breeze, the heat of the summers sun or the looming presence of a storm. Jennifers paintings aim to evoke the feelings of being within nature and the landscape around us. A mindful approach to what can be seen, felt and heard whilst on her daily dog walks along Suffolks coastline and woodlands. By observing the visual with the senses the essence of the place is captured.

Jennifer uses this mindfulness to guide her painting process ensuring the painting becomes an extension of her own sensory experience of the landscape; the visual, the feeling and the hearing emerges onto the substrate to create a narrative to draw the viewer in, not just to view the painting but also to experience it. Jennifer will often paint in collections of work using a limited palette. By painting in a series or a collection Jennifers artwork becomes indicative of a given place, time or feeling.
