Colin Kitchener

The beautiful medieval properties throughout East Anglia have always been a passionate interest of mine together with the countryside and wildlife. This has inspired me to create unique wall plaques with reclaimed peg tiles which I paint using water based acrylics. Each piece is original with rugged terracotta texture brought about during the firing process and exposure to the elements. Some examples will be centuries old and often bear the original craftsman’s finger prints arising when handling the soft clay. I source the tiles from reclamation yards, searching for interesting pieces before gently cleaning and then painting.

I have always appreciated how robust and aesthetically pleasing these tiles are, especially when seen on medieval or crooked timber framed buildings. The original craftsmen surely could not have imagined that these materials would still adorn the roofs of thousands of timber framed houses into the 21st Century.

Due to the original manufacturing process, the size and colour of each tile will vary as will the artwork. Every piece is worked on individually - the texture, inconsistencies and absorbency levels often dictating what painting will work best.

Every tile has its own story to tell…
